Photo of the Day: Yosemite Tunnel View

I took this photo at the Tunnel View lookout on my way down to Yosemite Valley. The scene looks so pristine you’d never know that, as I snapped this photo, I was drowning in a sea of selfie stick-wielding people who seemed more interested in taking photos of themselves than of the gorgeous view in front of them.

Photo of the Day: Yosemite Valley

This was taken during my hike through Yosemite Valley last year. I think I was on the Cook’s Meadow loop (at least that’s the trail I had been looking for when I started, though I had trouble finding it and just sort of made my way toward the open area). It was a beautiful October day and I had the trail mostly to myself for large stretches.

One thing I like about this photo is how the tiny people in the distance provide a sense of scale to the enormity of the tall tree and surrounding mountains.

Yosemite 2014: The Movie (revisited)

I just discovered that my previously posted Yosemite movie was banned by YouTube from being playable in almost every country in the world, including the United States. Apparently that’s what happens when you use Pink Floyd as your background music. Oh well, lesson learned; back to using classical music in all my videos.  This new version features “The Unanswered Question” by Charles Ives, though apparently even classical music occasionally runs up against the long arm of the copyright police–one of my previous videos using a Holst piece is banned in Germany.

Anyway, here again is the compilation of all videos taken during my two-day visit to Yosemite National Park back in October 2014.  You can view the HD version by selecting 1080p from the quality settings of the video.

Photos of the Day: An Osprey Brings Home Dinner

During my recent trip to Cape May I went on a bird watching cruise through the marshes, where I was lucky enough to capture this osprey in flight clutching a fish in its talons.

You get two photos for the price of one today. 🙂

Photo of the Day: Leeds Castle Peacock

During my visit to Leeds Castle in England I happened upon this peacock roaming the grounds. I followed it for a bit and eventually it sat down, almost as if posing for me.

Photo of the Day: Dragonfly Sunset

This was taken a few years ago from the back porch of a house I rented in the Villas, a town located on the bay side of the Cape May peninsula in New Jersey. The view from the house, which sat right on the bay, was gorgeous. The house itself, however, was another matter, but that’s a story for another day.

I was armed only with my pocket point-and-shoot, but even with limited zoom and resolution I was surprised at how well it captured the dragonfly.

Photo of the Day: Cancun Lizard

Here’s a shot taken near the end of my Mexico trip this past fall.

Lizards are ubiquitous among the ruins in Mexico; I saw many climbing up and down the walls of the pyramids. And they apparently have no fear of humans because this one didn’t flinch when I came across it while climbing up to a small Mayan ruin along the beach in Cancun, standing still while I snapped multiple photos.

Dolphins of Cape May

The dolphin is one of my favorite animals, though I’m not exactly going out on a limb by saying that. I mean, who doesn’t love dolphins? I’ve been on a few whale/dolphin watching cruises, which are a great way to see them in their natural habitat, but in Cape May I don’t even need to leave the beach because it is quite common to see dolphins swimming offshore.

During my most recent visit a couple of weeks ago, I managed to capture some of them with my camera. The photos are bit grainy and soft because of how far away the dolphins were and how much of the images I had to crop, but they still turned out pretty well considering.
